The E24 6 series was BMW’s offering of a ‘Big Coupe’ and successor to the E9 (CS & CSL) Coupe. The E24 was designed by Paul Bracq after Bob Lutz rejected the idea of simply making the E9 taller. The 6 series was initially based on the E12 5 series chassis, but was changed to utilise the superior E28 5 series chassis in 1982. Unlike its E9 predecessor, the body of the E24 has a B pillar. Production started in January 1976 with the 630CS and 633CSi in February 1976. Originally the bodies were manufactured by Karmann, but production was later taken in-house to BMW. The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts and the rear suspension is independent semi-trailing arms. In 1982, the front suspension was upgraded to include twin-pivot lower control arms and the geometry of the rear suspension was revised. The steering uses a recirculating ball system with power assistance. In 1979 the carburetted 630CS was replaced with the 628CSi; this car had an L-jetronic fuel injected 2.8L engine taken from the BMW 528i. In 1980, the fuel injection system was changed to a Bosch Motronic DME. In 1982 (Europe) and 1983 (US), the E24 changed slightly in appearance, with an improved interior and slightly modified exterior. This slight change in 1982 (Europe) was in fact a major change as pre-1982 cars were based on the E12 5-series chassis; after mid-1982, E24s shared the improved E28 5-series chassis. The only parts that remained the same were some of the exterior body panels. E24s produced after June 1987 came with new, ellipsoid headlamps which project the beam more directly onto the road surface. The sleeker European bumpers were also discontinued. The 628CSi ceased production in May 1987. The first 628CSi left the factory in June 1979 and the last ever produced left the factory in May 1details below was the last year for the E24 with production stopping in April. The official total production number from BMW for 628CSi models is 5950 units. 1083 of these were RHD examples – 862 automatics and 221 manuals.

This particular 628CSi is accompanied by an intriguing story, having been driven to Monaco in 1987 when its original owner sold his business. While there, it covered 12,000 miles in 9 years, before it was driven back to the UK in 1996 to be sold. The next owner entered the car into a concours competition, where it took 3rd place and scored a perfect 20 for originality. It was then taken to Scotland by the next owner until 2014 when the current owner bought it and shipped it to Ireland.

This stunning, freshly detailed example is one of 862 right hand drive automatics, presented in Schwarz Black. The Perlbeige interior is complemented by black leather seats with beige piping. The car displays 52,192 verified miles with meticulous BMW specialist service history, original Monaco registration plate and 20 MOT / NCT test certificates.
